U.S. DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE. FOREST SERVICE. FOREST PRODUCTS LABORATORY
This report is based on a joint FPL-AID sponsored probe into the question of a knowledge gap about physical, mechanical, and other wood characteristics of "secondary species" and if there is such a gap would closing it bring about a more rational use of the tropical forest resource.

Abstract
An astute understanding of the problems should lead to a properly oriented research effort. Perhaps then the forest can have a unique part in the social and economic evolution of tropical countries. A misinterpretation of the problems may not be catastrophic but it would be an ill-affordable squander of a limited research budget. The countries selected for review are: South America ... Surinam, Peru, and Colombia; West Africa ... Nigeria and Gabon; Southeast Asia ... Philippines and Malaysia (West Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak). This portion of the report is based mostly on a library study and is divided into seven parts: (1) Literature Review, (2) Forest Flora, (3) Commerical Species, (4) Forest Enumerations, (5) Silvicultural Systems, (6) Characterization of Primary Species, (7) Ten-year Summary of Roundwood Removals, Production, and Trade.
