Abstract
IN EARLY STAGES THE EXTENT/LOCALITIES OF VITAMIN A DEFICIENCY AND OTHER BASELINE DATA DETERMINED INCLUDING CLINICAL, BIOCHEMICAL, BACTERIOLOGICAL & EPIDEMIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF CONEAL DISEASES, NUTRITION STATUS SURVEYS & ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS. USING BASELINE STATISTICS & ANALYSES, METHODS DEVELOPED TO DISTRIBUTE & POPULARIZE VITAMIN A, INCLUDING POTENT VITAMIN A CAPSULES, VITAMIN A FOOD FORTIFICATION & DEVELOPMENT OF TRAINED NUTRITN FIELD WORKERS TO MODIFY LONG RANGE FOOD HABITS. Amendment of 7/1/85 increases funding in order to initiate new activities and expand ongoing ones. Operational research in 3 or 4 countries (including India) will assess the health impacts among preschool children of Vitamin A supplementation. Fortification of staple foods or condiments as an intervention approach will be studied in 4 or 5 countries. The project will also partially fund the operational costs of expanded Vitamin A interventions in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Zambia and will expand nutrition education activities generally, especially through mass media and social marketing campaigns conducted in conjunction with host country Vitamin A programs. (PD-AAR-235) Amendment of 6/10/86 extends PACD 1 year to 9/89 to permit the awarding of two new grants: (1) a grant, to be awarded on a competitive basis, to evaluate the impact of periodic vitamin A supplementation on child mortality and morbidity in one African country; and (2) a grant to the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC) to design and implement a collaborative garden vitamin A project in Africa. (PD-AAX-782) Amendment of 6/5/87 increases funding to expand the scope of existing activities and initiate new ones. The additional funds will be used to: (1) finance several PVO grants (22 proposals for which have been received); (2) reduce mortgages for AVRDC and for child mortality studies in Bangladesh and Sudan; and (3) support ongoing vitamin A activities of the National Academy of Sciences, Food and Nutrition Board, Committee on International Nutrition Programs (NAS/CINP, the IVACG, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture food technology branch.
