Abstract
The study was conducted by the Red Nacional de Organizaciones de Jóvenes Mayas (RENOMJ) and coordinated by Elva Cutz Yax, an expert in civic participation and social inclusion. The study was funded by USAID's Nexos Locales program, with contract number AID-520-C-14-00002, and was completed in April 2016. The study aimed to understand the characteristics, challenges, and opportunities faced by youth in Chichicastenango, as well as to identify the existing organizations and initiatives that promote youth leadership and participation. The study used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods. The study began with an introduction to the context of the municipality, including its geographical location, population demographics, and economic characteristics. The study then presented the methodology used, including the objectives, population, and techniques employed. The study also included a description of the network of interviewers, individual and collective interviews, and interviews with municipal authorities. The study's diagnostic section focused on the characteristics of the youth population, including their participation in civic activities, migration patterns, employment opportunities, and challenges faced by youth with disabilities and those from the LGBTQ+ community. The study also presented a mapping of the social landscape of youth, including their perceptions of what it means to be young, their participation in municipal activities, and the opportunities and barriers they face. The study's findings highlighted the importance of promoting youth participation in civic activities, addressing the challenges faced by youth with disabilities, and providing opportunities for employment and economic development. The study also identified the need for greater inclusion of youth in decision-making processes and the importance of promoting a positive attitude towards youth with disabilities. The study's recommendations included the establishment of a youth office in the municipality, the creation of a directory of organizations with a focus on youth, and the development of programs to promote youth participation and leadership. The study also recommended the implementation of policies and programs to address the challenges faced by youth with disabilities and those from the LGBTQ+ community. The study's methodology included the use of tables and figures to present the data collected, including demographic information on the youth population, their participation in civic activities, and their perceptions of the challenges they face. The study also included a bibliography of sources used in the research. Overall, the study provided a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by youth in Chichicastenango, and highlighted the need for greater inclusion and participation of youth in decision-making processes. The study's recommendations provided a framework for policymakers and practitioners to address the needs of youth in the municipality and promote their leadership and participation.
