Abstract
The study aimed to understand the youth population, their participation in civic life, and their access to opportunities. The research was coordinated by Elva Cutz Yax, Specialist in Civic Participation and Social Inclusion, and was funded by USAID Nexos Locales. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods. The research team conducted individual and group interviews with youth, as well as with municipal officials and other stakeholders. The study also collected data on the population of Zacualpa, including demographic information and socioeconomic indicators. The study found that the youth population in Zacualpa faces significant challenges, including limited access to education and employment opportunities. Many youth reported feeling disconnected from civic life and lacking opportunities for participation. The study also highlighted the importance of addressing the needs of youth with disabilities and those from the LGBTQ+ community. The study identified several key areas for intervention, including improving access to education and employment opportunities, increasing civic participation, and promoting the inclusion of youth with disabilities and those from the LGBTQ+ community. The study also recommended the establishment of a youth office within the municipality to coordinate youth programs and services. The study's findings have important implications for policymakers and practitioners working to promote youth development and civic participation in Zacualpa. By understanding the needs and challenges of the youth population, policymakers can develop targeted interventions to address these issues and promote greater inclusion and participation.
