Abstract
The study aimed to characterize the youth population, identify their participation in civic activities, and assess their migration patterns, employment opportunities, and access to resources. The study also sought to understand the perspectives of youth with disabilities and those from the LGBTQ+ community. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A total of 150 youth were interviewed individually, and 20 focus groups were conducted with youth from different backgrounds. Additionally, interviews were conducted with municipal authorities and representatives from local organizations. The study collected data on the demographic characteristics of the youth population, their participation in civic activities, and their perceptions of the barriers and opportunities they face. The study found that the youth population in San Juan Cotzal is characterized by high levels of migration, particularly to the United States. Many youth reported receiving remittances from their family members abroad, which they used to support their families and pursue education or employment opportunities. However, the study also highlighted the challenges faced by youth in accessing employment opportunities, particularly in the formal sector. The study recommended that local authorities and organizations prioritize the development of vocational training programs and job placement services to address the needs of the youth population. The study also identified the need to promote the participation of youth with disabilities and those from the LGBTQ+ community in civic activities and decision-making processes. The study recommended that local authorities and organizations develop inclusive policies and programs that address the specific needs and challenges faced by these groups. The study concluded that the development of youth leadership and participation in San Juan Cotzal requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the social, economic, and cultural challenges faced by the youth population.
