Abstract
The universites include Hasanuddin, Ikip Ujung Pandang, Sam Ratulangi, IKIP Manado, Lambung Mangkurat, Mulawarman, Pattimura, and Cenderawasih. A familiar litany of weaknesses were identified at each university -- lack of textbooks and equipment, inadequate language training, and the need for staff upgrading. Of the member universities, Hasanuddin University had the largest, best trained faculty. The report includes a discussion of the region in terms of agricultural goals and educational resources, as well as a social analysis briefly outlining the ethnic groups, religions, resources, and class structures found on the Islands. The importance and role of women in this project and other development efforts are discussed. The authors recommend a number of steps to increase the participation of women in higher education. A brief bibliography (12 entries, 1970-1978) concerning women in development is also included in the report. This feasibility report is attached to the Eastern Islands Agricultural Education project paper (PD-AAF-895-B1).
