USAID. MISSION TO INDONESIA
Grant and loan are provided to the Government of Indonesia (GOI) to develop and improve graduate education at the Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), Indonesia"s leading agricultural school.
1978
Abstract
IPB will implement the project with technical assistance from USAID and the University of Wisconsin (UOW). Committees on educational planning and campus design will be created to plan IPB"s graduate education programs and physical campus development. Short- and long-term training will be provided to IPB staff to strengthen course offerings in research, public service, rural family resources, and environmental protection. Administration of the school will be reorganized to promote its development as a national resource center. Four persons will receive long-term training in administration, six persons in key areas of environmental study, and four persons in rural home and family. Courses of particular interest to rural women, such as nutrition and child development, will be introduced. Fourteen professors will spend a month each at UOW to study university/graduate education planning. Opportunities for IPB professors to work on research or post-doctoral fellowships at UOW will also be provided. In addition, two experts will be trained to work at IPB"s new Information Resource Center and 60 professors will have their skills upgraded. An Information Resource Center will be constructed and the facilities of the existing Center for Environmental Studies will be expanded and improved. UOW consultants will assist in procurement of equipment (including printing and reproduction machines) and instructional materials to make the two centers fully operational. The project will remove the physical constraints on IPB"s development and rapidly expand its capacity to train graduate students for rural development assistance. By the end of the project, at least 20% of IPB"s permanent full-time staff will hold doctorates and 300 M.S. degrees will be awarded. Staff members will participate in research and training efforts with the GOI Ministry of Agriculture.
