Abstract
Of central concern is the creation of rural employment and the increase of rural incomes. The study is very broad, covering 17 sectors in which both private and cooperative small and micro-enterprises can significantly contribute to Rwanda"s economy. The most promising technologies include milk preservation, sunflower seed processing, agricultural lime, spent brewery grains for animal feed, use of pozzolanic materials for cement, and metalworking. The report summarizes the most important market and technological considerations for each of these technologies and notes recommendations for studies and other work to promote their successful application. Each section describes a subproject activity that would result in the creation of at least one business based on each of these technologies. Eleven other, less promising technologies are also briefly discussed. These include brewing, cassava processing, mushroom cultivation, sorghum dehulling and composite flour, clay tile and brick production, sisal processing, micro-hydropower, portable saw mills, rhizobium bacteria, locally manufactured packaging, and agglomerated charcoal briquettes.
