Abstract
Demographic surveillance work continued through 12/81 under a no-cost contract extension. The current population file (as of 8/78) was not produced due to incomplete migration data and the ease of producing this file from other files. Otherwise, all work contracted for was completed. JHU prepared and sent to the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research in Bangladesh (ICDDR) the 1968, 1970, and 1974 censuses and consolidated files for the old trial, new trial, and Matlab field areas and for 1966-78 "Domesday Book", along with documentation. Each consolidated file contains linked and edited records for every person having at least one record during the time period and in the geographic area of the file. An edited sex and date of birth is provided for each person, along with codes indicating consistencies or the lack thereof among a person"s records. Tapes for the files are being maintained by JHU"s Population Center. Since unfunded maintenance cannot be guaranteed, JHU has urged the ICDDR to make back up copies of the tapes sent them, as well as to update and where necessary correct them. At the recommendation of a visiting JHU staff member, the ICDDR sent two staff members to JHU to familiarize themselves with the construction and documentation of the data sets. Research on contraceptive distribution continued through 4/30/82 under a no-cost contract extension. A total of 14 papers have been published since the 7/2/80 progress report, most of them dealing with rural Bangladesh. Five other papers, three of which deal with the Matlab project, are in preparation. One of these, an analysis of use continuance rates of individual contraceptive methods in the Matlab project, has now been completed. It is JHU"s understanding that only this study is part of the contract. The ICCDR rejected JHU"s nominee for research associate in Dacca in favor of its own nominee. Since the ICDDR did not provide satisfactory documentation to allow JHU to request A.I.D."s approval of its nominee, JHU, with A.I.D."s approval, used the funds allocated for the position to fund the no-cost extensions.
