Abstract
The program focuses on three key components: Livelihoods, Leadership, and Life-Skills. The Livelihoods component is designed to improve the economic well-being of youth by providing them with access to finance, business training, and market opportunities. In April 2021, the Livelihoods component achieved significant milestones. A total of 202 youth were trained in entrepreneurship and business management skills using the OYE curriculum. The training covered life skills such as self-awareness, goal setting, and time management, as well as entrepreneurship skills like marketing, record keeping, and financial literacy. The trainings were conducted in different venues in Mbarali and Busokelo District councils in Mbeya region, adhering to COVID-19 protocols. The training series resulted in the establishment and formalization of youth-led enterprises. AY grantee, Five Star Trainers, reported that 67 beneficiaries (44 female, 19 male) have established microenterprises. The grantee facilitated business registration of seven youth, secured a Taxpayer Identification Number for one youth, and opened bank accounts for 67 youth with the National Microfinance Bank. These initiatives will enhance youth access to finance from Local Government Authorities (LGAs) and other financial institutions. The YSLA operations have continued to fuel youth economic empowerment, particularly for female youth who are less mobile to venture in distance income-generating opportunities. In Zanzibar, a total of six new YSLA groups were formed in April 2021. The YSLA operations have helped youth to diversify their income-generating activities and establish new businesses. For example, Asha Matinya, a 27-year-old community mobilizer from Kising'a ward, has established a restaurant and a shop through the YSLA operations. She has been able to send her daughter to a private boarding school and renovate her house with new iron sheets. In addition to the Livelihoods component, the AY program also focuses on Leadership and Life-Skills. The Leadership component aims to develop the leadership skills of youth, while the Life-Skills component focuses on providing youth with the skills they need to succeed in life. The program's overall goal is to promote youth economic empowerment and improve their livelihoods. The AY program has made significant progress in promoting youth economic empowerment in Tanzania. The program's focus on Livelihoods, Leadership, and Life-Skills has helped youth to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in business and life. The program's achievements in April 2021 demonstrate its commitment to promoting youth economic empowerment and improving their livelihoods. The program's impact can be seen in the establishment of new businesses, the improvement of existing businesses, and the increase in youth access to finance.
