Presents final evaluation of a 1987-92 grant to the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) to support wildlife management training at the College of African Wildlife Management (CAWM), Mweka, Tanzania.
1992

Abstract
AWF met or exceeded targets in all four areas of the grant and proved itself a model of transparency in implementing and reporting on grant activities. Specific achievements were as follows. (1) AWF supported 14 scholarship students at CAWM during the grant period, vs. a target of 10. These included certificate, diploma, and post-graduate candidates from Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria, Malawi, and Zambia. All students were satisfied with the level of scholarship support, judge their training to be appropriate and effective, and feel that AWF has treated them in a professional manner. AWF purchased over 200 texts for the CAWM library, as well as countless reprints of journal articles and other documents. However, the library still needs a qualified librarian to oversee operations and determine how the library may best serve the needs of faculty and students now and in the future. AWF provided CAWM the full range of teaching aids and field equipment called for in the grant -- binoculars, cameras, videos, a photocopy machine, slide synchronizer, camping gear, mapping equipment, etc. This did not solve all of CAWM's equipment needs, however, and the problem is compounded by rough and careless handling of equipment by the students themselves and still further by the lack of a reliable nearby repair service. This problem admits no easy solution, especially in light of CAWM's increasing enrollment. In any case, responsibility for keeping field equipment in working order devolves on CAWM authorities alone and not on AWF or any other donor. Finally, an AWF consultant designed a "Man and Wildlife" course as the newest addition to the CAWM curriculum. Students are satisfied with the course, although efforts to keep it up to date suffered a setback in early 1991 as a result of the departure of the Peace Corps volunteer charged with its revision.
