Abstract
The Southern African Drought Response was possibly a world record success. In the face of a 100-year record drought and on top of 12 years of declining precipitation, and despite a multitude of overlapping responses, the program moved 11.5 million MTs of food through 8 transport corridors to 6 land-locked countries and 80 million people. In addition, Zimbabwe"s purchase of 1.2 million MT set a record for host country self-help on a commercial basis. The Southern Africa drought relief/response prevented any deaths due to the drought, and provided equal attention to recovery. Moreover, food production recovered with the first rains, and persons and countries did not become donor-dependent. (Author abstract, modified)
