As an aid in solving the firewood crisis suffered by Third World countries, this volume describes 27 fast-growing trees and shrubs suitable for cultivation in areas of extreme fuel shortage, While primary emphasis is on plants suited to meeting individual families" fuelwood needs, species useful for fueling small factories, electric generators, and crop driers are also included.

Abstract
In particular, multipurpose trees are discussed: plants that adapt well to different sites, establish easily, and require little care; plants that thrive in problem environments such as steep hillsides, low-nutrient or toxic soils, and arid zones and tropical highlands; and plants that are characterized by nitrogen-fixing ability, ability to coppice, and high calorific value. Divided into chapters on fuelwood species for humid tropics, tropical highlands, and arid and semiarid regions, the report describes each species with regard to its main attributes, distribution, use as firewood, yield, environmental requirements, establishment, and pests and diseases; other uses and related species are detailed. Appendices include a summary of species characteristics, a 6-page list of selected readings (1851-1982), and a list of research contacts. (Author abstract, modified)
