Abstract
The project aims to reduce food insecurity among vulnerable rural populations in the province of Sanmatenga in the Centre North Region. To achieve this goal, the project has implemented various activities under Strategic Objective 1 (SO1), including dry season market gardening, training of field officers and producers, supply of cultivation inputs, demonstrations of good farming techniques, and livestock production improvement activities. During the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2014, activities under SO1 focused on training field officers and producers in dry season market gardening. The project conducted awareness sessions through its Local Implementing Partners (LIPs) in the four targeted communes, bringing together local authorities and representatives of selected farmer groups. A total of 199 awareness sessions were conducted, introducing the project and its philosophy to the group participants. A census of new groups commenced in December and is ongoing. The project also built the technical organization and management capacity of producer groups through training. Field officers and producers received training in good farming techniques, and cultivation inputs were supplied to producers. Demonstrations of good farming techniques were conducted through Farmer Fields Schools (FFS), and the organizational and management capacities of producer groups were reinforced. In addition, the project implemented a livestock production improvement activity, including a vaccination campaign. The vaccination campaign aimed to improve the health and productivity of livestock, which is essential for sustainable agricultural production. Key achievements under SO1 during the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2014 include the identification and organization of new beneficiary producer groups, the training of field officers and producers in dry season market gardening, and the supply of cultivation inputs to producers. These achievements are expected to contribute to the achievement of the project's goal of reducing food insecurity among vulnerable rural populations in the province of Sanmatenga. The project also made progress in implementing other activities under SO1, including the reinforcement of producer groups' organizational and management capacities and the improvement of livestock production. These activities are expected to have a positive impact on agricultural production and contribute to the achievement of the project's goal. In terms of metrics, the project distributed 338.402 metric tons of preventative food rations to 10,766 pregnant and lactating women and 15,296 children during the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2014. This achievement is a significant contribution to the project's goal of reducing food insecurity among vulnerable rural populations. Overall, the project's progress under SO1 during the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2014 is a positive step towards achieving its goal of reducing food insecurity among vulnerable rural populations in the province of Sanmatenga. The project's activities under SO1 are expected to have a positive impact on agricultural production and contribute to the achievement of the project's goal. Strategic Objective 2 (SO2) of the project focuses on increasing household incomes. The project aims to achieve this objective by improving market linkages and access to business development services. During the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2014, the project implemented various activities under SO2, including the implementation of six agricultural fairs to provide market gardening inputs to farmers and the pursuit of the operationalization of the integrated database. The project also conducted capacity building activities directed at farmers, LIP officers, and ViM staff. These activities aimed to improve the skills and knowledge of project stakeholders, enabling them to effectively implement project activities and achieve the project's objectives. In addition, the project prepared for the launch of the small grant program, which aims to promote non-farm opportunities and reinforce specific activities under SO3, including Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and complementary local food promotion for nutrition improvement. Key achievements under SO2 during the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2014 include the implementation of six agricultural fairs, the pursuit of the operationalization of the integrated database, and the capacity building activities conducted for farmers, LIP officers, and ViM staff. These achievements are expected to contribute to the achievement of the project's goal of increasing household incomes. The project also made progress in implementing other activities under SO2, including the preparation for the launch of the small grant program and the pursuit of the operationalization of the integrated database. These activities are expected to have a positive impact on household incomes and contribute to the achievement of the project's goal. Overall, the project's progress under SO2 during the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2014 is a positive step towards achieving its goal of increasing household incomes. The project's activities under SO2 are expected to have a positive impact on household incomes and contribute to the achievement of the project's goal.
