Abstract
The project aimed to strengthen leadership, management, and governance (LMG) in the Ethiopian health sector. The project focused on improving the capacity of health service managers and leaders to manage and govern health services effectively. The project implemented various activities to achieve its objectives. One of the key activities was the development of a revised curriculum for Health Services Management (HSM) courses at public health institutions. The revised curriculum integrated updated LMG skills and practices, including a governance component. The curriculum was piloted in summer classes at Mekelle and Hawassa universities, and 644 students, including health officers, nursing, and midwifery students from six universities, received the new HSM course. The project also provided governance training for 20 HSM course instructors from eight universities that integrated LMG into their HSM courses. Additionally, the project supported Team Training Programs (TTP) for staff and graduating students from Jimma University and Gondar University, focusing on incorporating the challenge model into TTP. A total of 37 staff and 189 graduating students from Jimma University, and 51 staff and 311 graduating students from Gondar University, received LMG capacity building orientation. The project's intermediate result 1, Management System in Place for Harmonized and Standardized LMG Pre- and In-service Training Modules, was achieved through various key activities. These activities included governance training, support to TTP, and LMG core competency development and content integration workshops. The project's efforts aimed to build capacity on governance concepts and practices among health service managers and leaders. The project's accomplishments and successes during the reporting period included the development and implementation of a revised HSM curriculum, governance training for HSM course instructors, and support to TTP. The project also conducted mid-term reviews and monitoring visits to assess progress and provide recommendations for improvement. The project's geographic focus was on Ethiopia, with a specific emphasis on the health sector. The project's timeframes were from October 1, 2014, to March 31, 2015, and the reporting period was from April 1, 2014, to September 30, 2014. The project's recommendations for the next reporting period included continued support for the implementation of the revised HSM curriculum and governance training for health service managers and leaders. The project's implementation details included the provision of technical assistance, travel and visits, and activity implementation. The project's technical assistance included governance training, support to TTP, and LMG core competency development and content integration workshops. The project's travel and visits included international travel to conferences, workshops, and meetings, as well as monitoring visits to assess progress and provide recommendations for improvement. The project's accomplishments and successes during the reporting period were significant, with a total of 644 students receiving the new HSM course, and 20 HSM course instructors receiving governance training. The project's efforts aimed to build capacity on governance concepts and practices among health service managers and leaders, and to improve the management and governance of health services in Ethiopia.
