Abstract
The training is participatory in nature, focusing on feedback from head teachers on the successes and challenges faced in implementing Tusome. Upon arrival, participants are introduced to the agenda for the day, which includes a welcome and introduction session, training expectations, establishing norms, and training objectives. The objectives of the head teacher training are to examine the gains achieved by learners as a result of the Tusome program, examine challenges facing the Tusome program and how to overcome them, and examine the roles of head teachers in the Tusome program. The Direct Instruction Model is introduced as a key methodology used in Tusome to teach all activities. The model consists of three steps: "I do," "We do," and "You do." In the "I do" step, the teacher models the activity, while in the "We do" step, the teacher and learners work together to practice the new skill. In the "You do" step, learners practice the skill alone and then apply what they have learned. Participants are then asked to share their successes and challenges in implementing Tusome in their schools. They are divided into groups and asked to discuss and record their experiences. The facilitator then shares the successes and challenges with the plenary, highlighting the importance of celebrating successes and addressing challenges. The training also focuses on the role of head teachers in supporting teachers to implement Tusome. Head teachers are expected to accompany Quality Assurance and Standards Offices during teacher observations, sit through teacher feedback sessions, and follow up on feedback given by QASOs. They are also expected to ensure that teachers attend Tusome training and cluster meetings, and that every class has a Tusome Pupils Book and a Teacher's Guide. In addition, head teachers are tasked with ensuring that Tusome materials are properly cared for and managed. This includes ensuring that books are kept in a safe place, covered, and not taken home by pupils. Head teachers are also expected to ensure that all learners have a Pupils Book at a ratio of 1:1 and that all teachers have a Teacher's Guide. The training also emphasizes the importance of awareness and sensitization of parents and the Board of Management on the Tusome program. Head teachers are encouraged to involve these stakeholders in supporting the school to improve its academic performance. Throughout the training, participants are encouraged to take notes and engage actively in discussions and activities. The training is designed to equip head teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively implement the Tusome program in their schools and to address the challenges faced in implementing the program.
