Abstract
IT PROVIDES A CROSS-SECTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION"S APPROACHES TO PROBLEMS OF DEVELOPMENT. THE PUBLICATION INCLUDES STUDIES OF THE RESPONSES BY INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION TO THE PROBLEMS OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT, OF THE UNIVERSITY"S ROLE IN DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS, AND OF THE EFFORTS OF HIGHER EDUCATION TO IMPROVE LEARNING IN THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS. IT ALSO INCLUDES STUDIES OF MANPOWER TRAINING, OF THE SPECIAL PROBLEMS OF ESTABLISHING A UNIVERSITY IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY, OF HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEMS AS A WHOLE, AND OF RESEARCH AND EXTENSION FOR INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT. COUNTRIES WHICH PARTICIPATED IN THE STUDY ARE BOTSWANA, LESOTHO, SWAZILAND, CAMEROON, ETHIOPIA, GHANA, MALI, MAURITIUS, NIGERIA, SUDAN, TANZANIA, INDIA, INDONESIA, MALAYSIA, THE PHILIPPINES, SINGAPORE, THAILAND, BRAZIL, COLOMBIA, MEXICO, AND PERU.
