INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH IN THE DRY AREAS (ICARDA)
ICARDA research results for 1985 are described in this report, under the following headings: (1) farming systems (barley/livestock systems, wheat-based systems, and intersystems research); (2) cereal crops improvement (barley, durum wheat, bread wheat, triticale, and high-elevation research); (3) food legume improvement (faba beans, lentils, kabuli chickpeas, and seed and straw quality); (4) pasture, forage, and livestock (using annual pastures to replace fallow, forage breeding and agronomy, marginal land improvement, and livestock management and nutrition).

Abstract
Associated activities in international cooperation, training, and publications are outlined for each research area. This report also describes the activities of the ICARDA Genetic Resources Unit and, more briefly, ICARDA"s computer services, visitors" services, and activities in communications and documentation. Meteorological data are presented as well, underlining the fact that the outstanding weather-related event of the 1984-85 winter cropping season was a severe frost during February and March, followed by a drought, allowing ICARDA for the first time to assess the effects on germplasm of combining both of these stresses in the same season.
