Abstract
The trial is designed primarily to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of using village health service volunteers in case finding and treatment of malaria, but will also include: community education; selective testing of insecticide-treated bed nets; and radical treatment and epidemiological study of positive malaria cases identified through microscopy. Fifteen villages have been selected for the trial. This report catalogs all the steps necessary to prepare for start-up, including (1) identifying individuals to be responsible for implementation and evaluation; (2) training of trainers, local medical personnel and officials, microscopists, entomologists, and village volunteers; (3) providing necessary technological and didactic tools; and (4) resolving logistical and budgetary issues.
