Abstract
Within the context of the need in developing countries to establish a new research infrastructure in order to effect agricultural modernization, the first half of this paper discusses the structure of the CCIP"s, which are largely responsible for increased agricultural production; research priorities and activities responding to new problems; and interinstitutional and interdisciplinary collaborations; testing procedures followed in the "All-India Coordinated Trials," the CCIP"s response to the problem of increasing genetic uniformity, and progress toward crop transformation through accelerated genetic improvement. A concluding section stresses the importance of improving the transfer of technology to farmers. Sixteen figures and three tables are provided.
