Abstract
In one of the most populous countries in the world, where poverty and malnutrition are the major concerns of the government, the National Family Nutrition Improvement Program (UPGK) was begun with UNICEF and USAID support in the late 1970"s. Beginning in 1989, the program activities in Java were coordinated successfully with the Family Planning Coordinating Board. On Java, although women enjoy high status -- women"s rights are generally the same as those of men with respect to marriage, inheritance, and property rights -- they do not always share equally in opportunities. In the UPGK, credit is linked with contraceptive acceptance and being a mother of a child under 5 years of age. Funds were allocated to sub-village administrative units to encourage small group formation. (Author abstract, from PN-ABN-639)
