Abstract
The program aims to generate employment and income in communities in poverty in Guatemala by linking the productive offer of small rural producers with local and international market demand. The program focuses on providing technical assistance, market intelligence, commercial promotion, training, and innovation in a sustainable management of natural resources and access to food for food security. The program has a duration of 2 years, from October 2010 to September 2012, and a budget of US$4,000,000. The geographic focus is on the departments of Quiché, Totonicapán, Huehuetenango, San Marcos, and Quetzaltenango. The program's objective is to improve the competitiveness of small rural producers through the development of business linkages and the provision of technical assistance, market intelligence, and commercial promotion. The program has achieved significant results in its first trimester, from January to March 2011. The program has identified 20 organizations to be supported, and 4 cases of business linkages were approved by the USAID Committee, with an investment of US$455,640. Additionally, 18 cases of follow-up business linkages were approved, with an investment of US$168,788. The program has also formalized alliances with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (FIDA) and other commercial entities, such as SIESA, Cooperativa 4 Pinos, San Juan Agroexport, Multiservicios Rodas, and Manos Campesinas. The program's activities are focused on the development of business linkages, technical assistance, market intelligence, commercial promotion, training, and innovation. The program has a strong focus on the development of small rural producers, with a goal of generating employment and income in communities in poverty. The program's results are expected to contribute to the reduction of poverty levels and the improvement of food security in Guatemala. The program's indicators include the number of new business linkages, new sales of goods and services, new certifications of quality, new alliances, new families benefited, new long-term businesses, new jobs generated, and new initiatives of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) certified in good practices or in the process of certification. The program's results are expected to be significant, with a projected impact on the lives of thousands of small rural producers and their families. The program's implementation is led by AGEXPORT, with the support of USAID and other partners. The program's management is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the program's activities, including the development of business linkages, technical assistance, market intelligence, commercial promotion, training, and innovation. The program's monitoring and evaluation system is designed to track the program's progress and results, and to identify areas for improvement. The program's impact is expected to be significant, with a projected increase in the income and employment of small rural producers, as well as an improvement in food security and a reduction in poverty levels.
