Abstract
The program has achieved significant results, including the certification of 476,415 hectares of ecologically important land and the promotion of sustainable forest products. The program has also supported the government of Guatemala in obtaining approval for a $5 million grant from the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) to support the preparation of the REDD+ process. In the Reserva de Biósfera Maya (RBM), CNCG has supported the Consejo Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (CONAP) through the Rapid Response Fund to intensify patrols and monitoring. This intervention has reduced the pressure on invasions and fires during the dry season, when extreme temperatures were recorded. CNCG has also provided assistance to two projects (Bosques para la Vida and GuateCarbon) to validate the reduced emissions from land-use change under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB), estimating around 1.8 million tons of CO2e validated for the period 2012-2014. In the Altiplano region, CNCG has implemented actions through The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for 10 demonstration sites for climate change adaptation. These measures include water, soil, and forest resource management, complemented with climate information and the functioning of the Early Warning System for floods. In coordination with Nexos Locales (another USAID-funded project), CNCG has initiated the development of municipal adaptation plans to climate change.
