Input and output distribution networks in the agribusiness sector in Rwanda : markets or pre-markets?

This study, one of a series focused on horticulture in African countries, examines financial contracts in the agribusiness sector in Rwanda, focusing on three crop subsectors: potatoes (the most commercialized crop in the country), dry beans (although this is a staple, Rwanda is least self-sufficient in production of this crop), and fresh fruits and vegetables (tomatoes, french green beans, and bananas, which are important because of their export potential).

Abstract
An overview of the Rwandan economy and a discussion of the study methodology are presented first. Agricultural input networks, agricultural output networks, and nontraditional agricultural exports are then described, after which key constraints to the development of the agribusiness sector are identified. A final chapter draws together the conclusions and recommendations of the study. A central conclusion is that conditions in Rwanda, especially the small land-holding structure, place binding constraints on the development of nontraditional agricultural exports. Ways in which public sector and donor interventions could ease some of those constraints are presented in conclusion. References included.
