Evaluates project to utilize U.S.
1977
Abstract
institutions to provide family planning (FP) training and consultant services for public and private sector institutions in East Asian and Pacific Basin LDC"s. Evaluation covers the period 1/1/76-12/31/77 and consists of an annual report, based on site visits and interviews, by the grantee, the University of Hawaii"s School of Public Health (SPH). As of 12/31/75, seven AID-funded LDC students had received M.S. degrees at SPH; four others had completed coursework by 12/31/76. Nine students are currently in residence and will receive degrees by 12/31/77. These low totals accord with recommendations given SPH by A.I.D."s Office of Population (5/75). Short-term training provided by SPH included a successful Inter-Institutional Workshop (II/WS) on the role of the general hospital in family health and planning for 11 mid-level (ML) Thai health personnel. The workshop was held in Hawaii 3/76 and was followed by a WS held in Thailand 4/76 and attended by 79 teaching/staff from 10 provinces. II/WS"s were also held in Hawaii (4/77) for 12 Thai health/FP personnel. A follow-up WS is planned (6/77) for 55 participants. In cooperation with the Battelle Human Affairs Research Center, a WS was held in Manila (6/76) on the household distribution of contraceptives. During 7/1/75-4/77, the Kapiolani Hospital provided 32 LDC physicians with short-term training in such areas as obstetrics and gynecology. Since trainees from Asia were fewer than anticipated, the number of participants was unexpectedly low. A pair of 2-week seminars for nursing and training directors in supervisory methods and nursing processes related to the needs of FP patients are planned for 1978. Also, SPH and the Faculty of Public Health/University of Indonesia will hold WS"s in administration and supervision for ML managers of the National Planning Coordinating Body. Recommendations include phasing out AID-funded degree training and training at Kapiolani Hospital by 6/30/78; expanding Hawaii-based and in-country short-term training; and devloping a follow-on project similar to the present project but without degree training.
