Abstract
institutions to provide population/family planning (P/FP) training and consultant services for public and private sector institutions in East Asian and Pacific Basin LDC"s. Evaluation covers the period 7/1/77-6/30/78 and consists of an annual report by the grantee, the University of Hawaii"s School of Public Health (SPH). One individual was added to SPH"s staff part time to coordinate short-term overseas training activities. Two personnel from the Kapiolani Health Services Office were dismissed. As of 7/1/77, 23 LDC students were attending the P/FP Program, eight of them fellows studying under AID/SPH sponsorship. In 9/77, four of 12 students entering the program were AID/SPH fellows. In 12/77, five AID/SPH fellows graduated from the progrm. In 5/78, the only two graduates were AID/SPH fellows. A seminar was held in 12/78 in Songkla, Thailand to increase the application in patient care, by nurses, of FP concepts in provincial hospitals and to encourage communication among hospital and public health sector personnel. Twenty teaching staff attended. Another workshop was held in 6/78 in the East Region (Pattaya) to improve the quality of patient care in Thailand"s provincial hospitals. Forty teaching staff attended. The seminar will be continued into 1978-79 for the North and North-East Regions. A final seminar was held in 6/78 to strengthen district level health planning and management practices through in-service training. Sixty-four teaching staff attended. In Sri Lanka, a seminar was conducted in 6-7/78 to discuss the roles of health team members and to formulate strategies and effective delivery methods of health care at the periphery through proper training and management. A total of 27 attended. Only one LDC physician requested training at Kapiolani Hospital. Physician trainees are more interested in clinical obstetrics and gynecology and view FP in the context of maternal and child health. Students from the international health program conducted research and completed field placements; others toured the hospital and worked with faculty.
