Abstract
The group's goal is to ensure that these products meet international standards for food safety and nutritional value, while also considering advances in product development, operational needs, and empirical understanding of costs and effectiveness. The 13th Inter-Agency Harmonization Meeting was held from May 26-28, 2020, and focused on several key topics. The meeting discussed the development of next-generation product formulations, including peanut-free RUTF formulations, and the Technical Expert Meeting on RUTF. The meeting also reviewed the Codex Alimentarius process and the status of the RUTF standard. The meeting highlighted the importance of ensuring food safety and quality in humanitarian foods. This includes controlling naturally occurring contaminants, such as mycotoxins, and applying existing Codex standards to control these contaminants. The meeting also discussed the use of remote auditing to ensure food safety and quality. The meeting emphasized the need for products targeted at adults, including the Nutritious Drink, and prevention products. The Global Action Plan on Child Wasting was also discussed, including aims, processes, and timelines to reduce child wasting and reach SDG targets. The meeting also focused on research coordination, linking programmatic research, product development, and supply chain considerations in planning. This includes the impact of GAP guidelines on supply needs, especially in the context of COVID-19. The meeting highlighted the importance of involving CHWs in the delivery of treatment and working with local health ministries. The meeting brought together several organizations, including the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The next meeting is scheduled for September 22-24, 2020.
