Abstract
As of July 29, 2011, there were 162,814 refugees in Liberia, with the majority residing in the Western region. The refugees are primarily from Côte d'Ivoire, with 204,417 internally displaced persons (IDPs) reported in the country as of July 22, 2011. The affected areas in Côte d'Ivoire include the Western region, where the capital city Abidjan is located. The humanitarian response in the region is being coordinated by various organizations, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the World Food Programme (WFP). The response efforts are focused on providing assistance in several key areas, including agriculture and food security, camp coordination, economic recovery and market systems, health, humanitarian coordination and information management, livelihoods, logistics and relief commodities, nutrition, P.L. 480 Title II emergency food assistance, protection, refugee assistance, shelter and settlements, and water, sanitation, and hygiene. In Liberia, the humanitarian response is being led by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) and the State Department's Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM). The response efforts are focused on providing assistance to refugees and IDPs, with a particular emphasis on addressing the needs of vulnerable populations, including women and children. The refugee movement in the region is a significant concern, with refugees fleeing from Côte d'Ivoire to neighboring countries, including Liberia, Guinea, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. The refugee camps in Liberia are being managed by various organizations, including the International Rescue Committee (IRC), the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The camps provide essential services, including food, shelter, and healthcare, to the refugees. The humanitarian crisis in West Africa is a complex issue, with multiple factors contributing to the displacement of people. The conflict in Côte d'Ivoire, which began in 2002, has resulted in significant human suffering and economic losses. The crisis has also had a devastating impact on the agricultural sector, with many farmers displaced or unable to access their land. The humanitarian response efforts are focused on addressing the immediate needs of the affected populations, while also working to address the underlying causes of the crisis.
