USAID. MISSION TO JORDAN
Loan is provided to the Government of Jordan (GOJ) to expand the water distribution system and construct a new sewage collection system and treatment plant in Irbid.
1980

Abstract
Jordan"s Water Supply Corporation (WSC) will implement the project with consultant assistance. Fifty km of polyvinyl chloride and ductile iron pipe and valves will be added to the existing water distribution system to improve water delivery, supplying water to an additional 2,000 households. To avoid excessive pressures under static and low-flow conditions, four main pressure zones will be created. Valves will be installed to reduce peak load pressures. Sixty-eight km of new water mains will be installed. Initial elements of a wastewater collection system for 7,500 households will be constructed. Since Irbid slopes south to north, 113.2 km of trunk sewers and laterals will be installed, primarily in the central, western, and northwestern sections of the city. A trunk sewer will be connected to the refugee camp in the center of the city. There will be 7.8 km of interceptor sewers to provide a basis for future expansion, and a pumping station to reserve flow from a dairy will be connected. A sewage treatment plant containing an aeration tank, two smaller clarifiers, headworks, and a chlorine contact chamber will be constructed at the northwestern edge of the city. Sludge drying beds will be developed north and west of the plant, whose effluent will be discharged into the Wadi el Hamman and dropped downstream for further aeration. Chlorination facilities will be included at the plant site as will a septage holding tank. To improve WSC"s ability to implement the project, 163 staff members, including the systems manager, six engineers and planners, 10 section heads, 35 operators and technicians, and support staff, will receive long- and short-term training. More precise training needs will be identified through an inventory of manpower and training resources. Training will be either academic training under the GOJ"s proposed National Training Program; on-the-job training by the consultant or at similar facilities; or training in the U.S.
