Project to test the applicability of seaweed farming as practiced in the Philippines to Tanzanian conditions.
1981

Abstract
Pilot seaweed farms will be established at Kigombe (near Tanga) on the mainland and on the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. The University of Dar es Salaam will implement the project. The managers of the three seaweed farms will receive training in the Philippines, where Euchema cultivation is already a multi-million dollar activity. In addition, a Swahili seaweed farming manual will be produced, three seminars will be held, and a solar seaweed drier will be constructed at Kigombe. Officers of Tanzania"s Fisheries Division Extension Service will assist the farm managers in extension work. Revenues from pilot farm harvest sales will be used to supply credit to villagers wishing to start their own farms.
