Abstract
The program provided about 27,600 MT of U.S. wheat to Zimbabwe in exchange for the provision of an equal amount of Zimbabwean white maize to Malawi. A total of 16,852 MT of maize was milled in Limbe and Lilongwe and distributed to some 650,000 Mozambican refugees. The remainder of the maize was distributed, mostly in whole grain form, to the Malawians in the mealy bug-affected Lake Shore Region and drought-affected areas in the Shire Valley. In- country transportation, storage, and distribution losses totalled 258 MT, which were considered reasonable. Transport of the maize from Zimbabwe to Malawi experienced some difficulties initially due to poor communications and problems in working out routes, organizing transport, and coordinating communications. Maize distribution to the refugees also encountered some problems due to inadequate storage and reporting procedures. These problems were eventually alleviated.
