Abstract
The program aims to improve early grade literacy and learning outcomes for all children in Malawi. A community of government officials, scholars, practitioners, and education development professionals contributed to the development of the textbook "Nditha Kuwerenga" (Foundations of Reading), which is the product of this collaboration. The textbook is designed to address the specific obstacles to literacy attainment facing students in the primary grades. The USAID-funded MTPDS program extends special appreciation to senior officials of MoEST, including the Secretary of Education, Science and Technology, and the PS for basic education. The program also acknowledges the contributions of dozens of committed educators and professionals who participated in the literacy activities of the MTPDS program. The textbook is the result of a scientifically valid understanding of the specific obstacles to literacy attainment facing students in the primary grades. The program's close collaboration with MoEST has been central to this work, and USAID/Malawi's financial and technical support has been instrumental in getting the textbook into the hands of those who need it most. The opinions expressed in the textbook are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the United States Agency for International Development. The textbook is divided into 18 units, each focusing on a specific aspect of reading and literacy. The units cover a range of topics, including phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. The textbook is designed to be used by teachers and students in the primary grades, and it provides a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to teaching reading and literacy skills. The program's goal is to improve learning outcomes for all children in Malawi, and the textbook is a key component of this effort. The program's close collaboration with MoEST and the support of USAID/Malawi have been instrumental in making this goal a reality. The opinions expressed in the textbook are those of the authors, and they reflect a deep commitment to improving education and literacy outcomes for all children in Malawi.
