Abstract
The project aims to improve the literacy skills of all Malawian children in the early grades through targeted teacher professional development activities. MTPDS is working in collaboration with the Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST). The project focuses on improving early grade literacy, which is a national priority in Malawi. According to the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) conducted nationwide in 2010, the majority of children in lower primary are unable to read a single word. This is a significant challenge that must be addressed to ensure the country's and its young people's prosperity in the future. MTPDS is working to address this challenge by supporting teachers in developing their skills and knowledge in teaching reading. The project is also engaging with parents and community members to promote a culture of reading and to support children in learning to read. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their child's education, including ensuring that their child attends school regularly, eats before going to school, and takes an interest in their child's work. The project is also promoting the importance of reading at home, where parents can assist their child in learning to read and write. Some tips for assisting children with reading at home include reading together every day, asking the child to name letters, helping them to learn the sound that each letter makes, and praising their progress. The project emphasizes that reading is the most important skill that a child will ever learn at school, and that success in all subjects depends on it. MTPDS is working in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, to implement the project's activities. The project's goal is to improve the literacy skills of all Malawian children in the early grades, and to promote a culture of reading in Malawi. By working together, the project aims to ensure that all children in Malawi have the opportunity to succeed in school and in life. The project's activities include providing teacher professional development, promoting a culture of reading, and supporting parents and community members in their role in promoting literacy. The project is also conducting assessments to monitor progress and to identify areas for improvement. By working together, MTPDS aims to make a positive impact on the literacy skills of Malawian children and to contribute to the country's development.
