Abstract
Following an overview of the Mexican environmental market, this report assesses 1992-94 market performance and identifies investment opportunities in the areas of water pollution control, solid and hazardous waste, energy efficiency, renewable energy, fixed-source air pollution control, environmental consulting, and environmental remediation. The market for water pollution control equipment and services is currently the largest, representing 40% of the total environmental market. For the future, the fastest growing markets are expected to be in water pollution control and solid and hazardous waste, which are both projected to grow at an average annual rate of 24% between 1994 and 1996; rapid growth from a small base is also predicted for the energy efficiency and environmental remediation services sectors. The report also discusses sources of financing for environmental investments. Key developments in the banking and securities markets have moderately increased the availability of short-term credits and long-term investment capital, and traditional financial intermediaries, as well as new bilateral and local sources of funding, are becoming more active in environmental lending. Appendices profile environmental and energy markets in the U.S.-Mexico border region, and provide contact information for selected financial institutions, Mexican and U.S. government agencies, and U.S.-Mexico Environmental Trade Associations.
