Abstract
To provide a context for the report"s statistical and analytical detail, chapter one contains an overview of The Gambia"s physical, economic, and political characteristics. Chapter two presents the study"s methodology, which included a baseline sample survey and an intensive study of sample villages; the samples" ethnic composition is briefly described. Chapter three delineates key features of the rural compound, including factors affecting technology adoption. The remaining three chapters focus on The Gambia"s agrarian structure. The farm"s production resources, both natural and capital, are outlined, and resource interrelationships are described. An overview of The Gambia"s crop structure and traditional technologies introduces a more detailed analysis of standard land use, cropping patterns, labor use, and crop yields. A final chapter presents a study of a farm"s livestock subsystem and the interrelationship of livestock and crop production in a mixed system.
