Feeding trials were run in The Gambia during the period 1982-85 to determine the nutritive value of crop residues as a dry season feed for livestock and to initiate an animal nutrition program to test residues with N"dama cattle.

Abstract
Animals were placed 2-5 per pen and were fed once a day, provided with water and mineral and protein supplements, and weighed regularly. The livestock were assigned randomly to feeds such as gamba grass, groundnut, and Stylosanthes hay; maize and sorghum stovers; rice straw; ground maize grain; and sorghum and maize silages. Narrative, tables, and graphs presenting the results of these trials - e.g., demonstration of the excellence of groundnut hay for feeding livestock - comprise the bulk of the paper. It is recommended that further investigation on the value of crop residue as feed for Gambian livestock focus on determining the quality of crop residues, the best time to feed them, and which animals will benefit most from the feeding.
