Morocco reproductive and child health programs : 30 years of collaboration, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Morocco, 1971-2000

It is a synthesis of a series of four reports focusing on the health areas in which USAID support in Morocco has been the greatest: family planning, child survival, safe motherhood, and sexually transmitted infection (STIs)/ HIV/AIDS. This document, as well as the series of four reports, attempts to answer the question "what was accomplished during the more than thirty years of collaboration between the MOH and USAID?" By demonstrating what was accomplished in Morocco and by identifying keys to the success of specific programs, valuable lessons learned are expected to help USAID programs in other countries. This document focuses on the period from 1971 to 2000, when the bilateral program between USAID and the Ministry of Health ended. Morocco has made tremendous strides in its health programs, as evidenced by steadily improving health outcomes over time. Because of this success, in the mid-1990s, USAID began a strategy to phase down its health program in Morocco. To provide transitional support to the MOH and strengthen sustainability, USAID and the MOH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (key interventions promote sustainability of population, health, and nutrition programs) for the period 2000-2003, but this phase is outside the scope of this report.
