1977
Abstract
Activities include: (1) developing a master plan for the Maseru campus; (2) completing definitive architectural and engineering plans, as well as a curriculum and training development plan which can be used by GOL and NUL in scheduling future development; (3) training 4 Basotho in specified areas of community college and adult education for administrative functions; (4) providing short-term curriculum advisors and a limited quantity of books and equipment; and (5) building 2 staff houses for U.S. advisors. The Government of Denmark will support a DEMS Institute of Labour Studies and contribute to the construction of the Maseru campus site. Project Paper Amendment of 11/80 authorizes Phase II of the project. Under this phase, the project will build an educational facility for the (now) Institute for Extra-Mural Studies (IEMS) at the Maseru campus and will expand IEMS educational and technical services in Lesotho and southern Africa by helping IEMS develop a systematic plan to aid sister institutions in the region and by establishing new IEMS extension centers at Mohobong and Ramabantu (activities of the latter specified). To help create a cadre of trained Basotho for IEMS, the project will provide U.S. Master"s degree training to 8 participants, and short-term and seminar training to 22 and 50 others, respectively. The project will reorganize IEMS"s Administrative, Extension, and Department Sections, developing improved systems for the first and reducing the number in the third from 9 to 7 - Businessmen"s Education, Labor Studies, Community and Leadership Development, Part-Time Degree, Media, and Research and Evaluation Sections and a new Adult Education Section. Project assistance to these sections is detailed. A long-term academic planner will continue to assist NUL"s institutional development. (PD-BAA-499)
