Project to make information on Billings Ovulation Method (BOM) of natural family planning more widely available.
1984
Abstract
The Family of the Americas Foundation (FAF) will produce and disseminate a film and educational materials on BOM, produce improved charting materials for BOM users, and train Latin Americans who wish to become BOM teachers. A l6mm full-length (26-30 min) sound/color film will be produced (with the help of a subcontractor) in 5 languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, and Portuguese) and distributed worldwide. The film will serve as an introduction to BOM for family planning service providers, and will explain how BOM works, how it can be taught, and how it must be practiced if it is to be effective. An estimated 50,000 people in l00 countries will view the film in its first year. Leaflets summarizing the film and possibly listing referral sites will be distributed to viewers. FAF will modify and simplify materials (charts and stamps) used by BOM users for recording significant menstrual events. A total of 100,000 charting kits will be produced in the above five languages. All materials produced will be culturally appropriate to the specific LDC populations for which they are intended. Also, 1,200 sets of three posters each will be produced for use by BOM teachers. A standardized short training course will be developed and held in Louisiana for about 150-180 Latin Americans who wish to become BOM teacher trainers; instruction will be provided both in BOM techniques and in training skills. Trainees will be provided with prototype educational materials for later use. Amendment No. 2 of 7/85 extends the project through 12/86 and authorizes an additional $875,000 to fund the expansion of training activities and the distribution of additional educational materials and film copies.
