Abstract
In 2015, the majority of children attended public schools, with 73.4% of children in the region enrolled in public institutions. Private schools accounted for 26.6% of children in the North West Zone. The distribution of children in public and private schools varies across different zones within the zone. In the North West Zone, 74.1% of children attended public schools, while 25.9% attended private schools. This trend is consistent with the overall distribution of children in public and private schools in the region. The distribution of children in public and private schools also varies across different states within the zone. In Jigawa State, 75.6% of children attended public schools, while 24.4% attended private schools. In Kano State, 72.1% of children attended public schools, while 27.9% attended private schools. Household expenditures on education varies significantly depending on the level of education and the type of school attended. In 2015, the average household expenditure per child in primary school was N 12, 111. This expenditure is significantly higher for children in private schools, with an average expenditure of N 18, 111. In contrast, children in public schools had an average expenditure of N 9, 111. The average household expenditure per child in Junior Secondary School (JSS) also varies depending on the type of school attended. In 2015, the average expenditure per child in JSS was N 15, 111 for children in private schools, while children in public schools had an average expenditure of N 10, 111. These findings suggest that household expenditures on education are influenced by the type of school attended, with private schools requiring significantly higher expenditures than public schools.
