Abstract
The data collected from the household survey indicates that parents are asked directly about their children's attendance in formal schooling, which differs from enrollment data collected from school registers. This distinction is crucial in understanding the nuances of school attendance in the region. The primary school attendance rates have shown a fluctuating trend over time. The net attendance rate (NAR) for primary school has ranged from 25-49.9% to 75-100%, indicating a significant variation in attendance across different age groups. The gross attendance rate (GAR) for primary school has also shown a similar trend, with a range of 0-24.9% to 50-74.9%. These fluctuations suggest that there are underlying factors contributing to the inconsistent attendance patterns. Residence also plays a significant role in determining school attendance in the North East Zone. The NAR for primary school has shown a variation across different residence categories, with the highest attendance rates observed in the 50-74.9% range. In contrast, the GAR for primary school has shown a lower attendance rate, particularly in the 0-24.9% range. These findings suggest that residence is a critical factor influencing school attendance in the region. The junior secondary school attendance rates have also shown a similar trend to primary school. The NAR for junior secondary school has ranged from 25-49.9% to 75-100%, indicating a significant variation in attendance across different age groups. The GAR for junior secondary school has also shown a similar trend, with a range of 0-24.9% to 50-74.9%. These findings suggest that the underlying factors contributing to inconsistent attendance patterns in primary school are also relevant to junior secondary school. The data collected from the household survey highlights the need for targeted interventions to improve school attendance in the North East Zone. The fluctuations in attendance rates and the variation across different residence categories suggest that a comprehensive approach is required to address the underlying factors contributing to inconsistent attendance patterns.
