Abstract
PES, consisting of a facesheet only, covers the period 3/75-10/84 and is based on an external evaluation (PN-AAT-403). Since examples of failed settlement projects are legion and success cases few, the relative success of the San Julian settlement makes it worthy of considerable review. San Julian remains today, shortly after the projects" completion, as it was designed 13 years ago, a home of small-holder colonists. The lessons learned from San Julian are valuable because new lands settlements remain an important development strategy, especially in Latin America. For these reasons, USAID/B agreed to fund the evaluation study, which forms part of the Institute for Development Anthropology"s worldwide study of colonization efforts.
