Abstract
This document, the first in a series, presents survey findings for NGOs in five countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. A second volume, scheduled for early 1996, will cover NGOs in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia. The aim of the document is to help NGOs in the region build on each other"s strengths and experience and to encourage donors to support regional cooperation and exchange. Each listing provides information on: type of organization; development sector(s) in which training takes place; whether training of trainers is provided; types of groups trained (with examples), as well as languages in which the training is conducted; training materials produced; training location and costs; networks to which the NGO belongs; and the name and address of a contact person. An introduction to the NGO community in each country identifies the perceived strength of the community as well as the problems it faces in terms of financing, need for capacity-building, etc. An extensive index provides a cross-reference of training and networking capabilities by sector.
