Abstract
The toolkit is a participant guide that provides training and resources for educators and stakeholders working with Deaf children. The toolkit is produced and printed with support from the United States Agency for International Development Malawi Mission (USAID/Malawi). The toolkit is structured around several key activities, including defining Deafness, introducing Deaf culture, and teaching Deaf children. The activities are designed to promote understanding, awareness, and inclusion of Deaf children in educational settings. The toolkit emphasizes the importance of sign language (SL) as a means of communication and the need for educators to develop good communication skills. Deafness is defined as partial or complete hearing loss, and Deaf people can experience varying degrees of hearing loss. The majority of Deaf people prefer to use SL as their primary means of communication. Deaf culture is a unique cultural grouping that is influenced by deafness and uses SL as its main means of communication. Deaf culture includes language values, traditions, social norms, and identity. Sign names play an integral role in Deaf Awareness, and Deaf people have their own cultural behaviors, known as Deaf culture. Deaf culture is defined as the set of societal beliefs, behaviors, art, literacy traditions, history, values, and shared institutions of communities that are influenced by deafness and which use SL as the main means of communication. Elements of Deaf culture include language values, traditions, social norms, and identity. The toolkit emphasizes the importance of promoting Deaf culture and language in educational settings. Educators are encouraged to develop good communication skills, learn to integrate and support Deaf friends, and give Deaf learners a chance to decide what works for them in terms of communication modes and sitting arrangements. The toolkit also highlights the importance of teachers knowing and using Malawian Sign Language (MSL) to enable Deaf learners to develop a feeling of belonging. The toolkit includes several activities and exercises that are designed to promote understanding and awareness of Deaf culture and language. These activities include defining Deafness, introducing Deaf culture, and teaching Deaf children. The toolkit also includes a screening and identification checklist and materials needed when teaching Deaf children. Overall, the Universal Design for Learning Literacy Toolkit is a valuable resource for educators and stakeholders working with Deaf children in Malawi. The toolkit provides training and resources to promote understanding, awareness, and inclusion of Deaf children in educational settings.
