Final report by the contractor, AMIDEAST, on the Peace Fellowship Program (PFP), a project (7/80-11/86) to provide graduate-level professional training to advanced Egyptian students.
1970
Abstract
As of 9/86, 1,634 fellows had completed their studies in the United States, in engineering, medicine, education, agriculture, business, and architecture. About 36 fellows withdrew from the program before completing their training and out of a total of 2,443 applicants, some 19% were women. The PFP has been a great success, not only in terms of the individual success stories of fellows (of which there are many), but also because it has helped to establish a real and lasting Egyptian presence in the U.S. academic community. In addition, U.S.-Egyptian professional relationships established through this program will help to ensure the continuation of joint development efforts between the two nations. Although start-up was hampered by a number of administrative problems, program management has now been successfully transferred to the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and adequate administrative procedures are in place. The project"s success in this regard highlights the importance of a flexible management structure and good coordination between the contractor and the implementing agency.
