USAID. BUR. FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. OFC. OF POPULATION
Project, follow-on to 9363005, to support the Population Council"s (PC) program to develop and disseminate improved family planning (FP) technologies.
1988

Abstract
This 10-year project has components in contraceptive R&D, contraceptive introduction into LDC"s, and assistance to country FP programs. The major areas of contraceptive research will be: subdermal contraceptive implants, including but not limited to NORPLANT implants; levonorgestrel releasing IUD"s; contraceptive vaginal rings, including the progesterone ring for lactating women; and luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) analogs for both male and female contraception. PC will also follow up on several other "probing studies," i.e., research leads currently in the earlier stages of development; these include new spermicides, gonadal peptides with potential as both male and female contraceptives, and contraceptive vaccines. PC will undertake a coordinated effort to introduce new FP technologies into LDC"s. The Council will adapt strategies already developed for NORPLANT implants and the Copper T-380A IUD to the newer technologies. It will also: take the steps needed to have new products registered in LDC"s; introduce the new methods into health care systems; and help modify the latter to meet the demands of the new methods. PC will undertake a series of field-based projects and other activities to strengthen country FP programs, with a stress on integrating new FP technologies into these programs. Areas of activity include program support, in-country TA, service delivery research, and the production of informational and educational materials relating to contraceptive technology. Efforts will include research to assess contraceptive use, demand, and acceptability, as well as the impact of different methods, different providers, and quality of care on contraceptive acceptance and continuation. Recent emphasis on support to programs in sub-Saharan Africa will continue. Because of the broad nature of A.I.D."s support under this project, PC will submit annual program proposals outlining suggested activities for the coming year. Specific and detailed proposals will be submitted for review and approval prior to initiating subactivities.
