1985
Abstract
The project will emphasize FP services, information, training, and institutional support. Pathfinder will continue to place priority on FP services. Subprojects in this area will: (1) upgrade clinic- and community-based delivery (CBD) of contraceptives and delivery of voluntary surgical contraception; (2) disseminate complete and accurate information on all FP methods, including natural FP; (3) provide genuine, informed choice to potential acceptors; (4) increase the availability of FP services; (5) expand and improve FP teaching in medical and nursing schools; (6) train program managers and paraprofessionals delivering FP information and services; (7) develop specialized CBD programs, especially in Africa; (8) arrange work exchanges for Pathfinder personnel with LDC organizations; and (9) link FP to other essential health services. A Women"s Program will incorporate FP information and services into indigenous women"s development and volunteer organizations; increase women"s participation as managers and leaders in FP programs; and make FP programs more sensitive to the needs and concerns of women, the primary clientele of FP efforts. A new Men and Family Planning Program will sponsor service programs to increase the availability of male contraceptives and support subprojects to increase knowledge and use of male methods and male support for wives" use of female methods. An expanded FP Commodities Program will increase the distribution of contraceptives to Pathfinder subprojects and to other qualified service projects. It will also provide TA in the area of FP commodity systems. Rapid response grants will continue to support urgent needs, special opportunities, and innovative FP programs. Institutional development and support programs will strengthen the ability of FP associations and federations to: provide technical and managerial support to local FP efforts; support multiple local service entities; and develop cost-reduction and income-generation mechanisms aimed at promoting financial independence among local FP organizations. Pathfinder training, communications, and evaluation programs will directly support these program areas.
