Abstract
The seminar was held on July 26, 2016, at the Mövenpick Hotel Karachi and brought together 132 representatives from various organizations, government, corporate sector, and academia to discuss the challenges and opportunities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the Water SDGs. The seminar aimed to highlight the issues, challenges, and opportunities in achieving the SDGs, especially the Water SDGs, and to raise awareness about the initiatives launched at USPCAS-W. It also aimed to sensitize different stakeholders to initiate efforts and develop action plans to meet the challenges and opportunities for achieving the SDGs. The seminar consisted of two sessions: the Inaugural Session and the Technical Session. The Inaugural Session featured welcome addresses by senior government officials, including Syed Murad Ali Shah, Senior Minister for Energy, Finance, Irrigation, Planning and Development (P&D) Irrigation, Government of Sindh, and Mr. Craig G. Buck, Deputy Mission Director for Sindh and Balochistan, USAID Pakistan. The Technical Session featured keynote addresses and presentations by experts from various fields, including water resources management, sustainable development, and environmental science. The speakers highlighted the importance of achieving the Water SDGs, which is crucial for human development, economic growth, and dealing with ecological and other threats in Pakistan. The seminar emphasized the need for an integrated approach to freshwater management to reconcile competing demands with supply and to provide a framework for effective operational actions. The speakers also highlighted the importance of international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programs. The seminar provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss the challenges and opportunities in achieving the SDGs, particularly the Water SDGs, and to develop action plans to meet the challenges and opportunities for achieving the SDGs. The seminar was a significant step towards initiating efforts for achieving the SDGs in general and the Water SDGs in particular. The seminar also highlighted the role of USPCAS-W in achieving the SDGs, particularly the Water SDGs. The center has been working towards promoting sustainable water management practices and providing capacity-building support to stakeholders in the water sector. The seminar concluded with a sense of urgency and commitment to achieve the SDGs, particularly the Water SDGs, by 2030. The participants agreed that achieving the SDGs is crucial for human development, economic growth, and dealing with ecological and other threats in Pakistan. The seminar provided a way forward to initiate efforts for achieving the SDGs in general and the Water SDGs in particular.
