Sign inUSAID. MISSION TO ZAIRE
Presents final Mission report on a project (7/84-10/87) to strengthen the capacity of Zaire's Centre d'Etudes pour l'Action Sociale (CEPAS) to help the rural poor apply appropriate technology (AT) solutions to development problems.
1987

Abstract
After a critical mid-term evaluation in 1985 and staff changes in 1986, the project was amended to focus its direction on valid AT activities, delete the video production component, and allow subgranting of funds for worthy AT efforts. By the PACD, CEPAS had: (1) developed a well-stocked and effectively managed AT library with 2,000 books, 1,500 brochures, and subscriptions to at least 25 periodicals; (2) engaged in 60 AT interventions with PVO's, NGO's, institutions, or individuals nationwide; (3) published five documents on AT; (4) produced an economical charcoal grill and developed/tested other appropriate AT tools and methods; (5) trained the three Zairians constituting the project staff - the Project Director, the Project Engineer, and the Librarian - in photography and funded a total of 10 trips for them, including one to India by the Project Director; and (5) provided training related to income generating activities in Kinshasa, Kikwit, and Lubumbashi. CEPAS continues to implement AT interventions and has addressed the question of the project's financial and program sustainability by hiring two of the three project staff to maintain the AT library and answer the many requests for AT information.
