Abstract
Learners will identify and solve problems, make responsible decisions, and work effectively with others as a member of a team or community. They will also communicate effectively, demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems, and participate as responsible citizens in local, national, and global communities. The lesson plans are structured around a comic story, Sharp, Sharp, Gugu and Friends, which serves as a narrative framework for teaching various skills and concepts. The story revolves around the lives of a group of high school learners who engage in action projects and face challenges related to the PHD syndrome, a problem where individuals try to stop others from improving themselves or their community. Lesson 1 introduces learners to the comic story and teaches them to predict what will happen next. Learners practice reading comic stories, identifying characters, and understanding speech bubbles and text boxes. They also learn to read frames in the correct order, from left to right and top to bottom. Lesson 2 continues to build on the skills introduced in Lesson 1. Learners practice reading the comic story, making predictions, and discussing the plot. They also learn to identify and analyze the characters' emotions and behaviors. The lesson aims to motivate learners to take part in action projects and to develop critical thinking skills. Lesson 3 focuses on the PHD syndrome, a problem where individuals try to stop others from improving themselves or their community. Learners discuss the PHD syndrome, its causes, and how to prevent it from happening. They also learn to analyze the characters' behaviors and make connections to real-life situations. Throughout the lesson plans, learners are encouraged to participate in discussions, share their thoughts and opinions, and develop critical thinking skills. The PHASE Teacher Lesson Plans aim to equip learners with essential skills and knowledge to achieve critical outcomes and become responsible citizens in their communities. The lesson plans are designed to be flexible and adaptable to different teaching contexts. They can be modified to suit the needs of learners with varying abilities and learning styles. The use of a comic story as a narrative framework provides a engaging and interactive way to teach various skills and concepts. The PHASE Teacher Lesson Plans are supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Grant No. 674-G-00-00-00004-00. The grant provides funding for the development and implementation of the lesson plans, which aim to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and community engagement among learners. The lesson plans are designed to be implemented over a period of time, with each lesson building on the previous one. The lessons are structured to provide a clear and logical progression of skills and concepts, with opportunities for learners to practice and apply what they have learned. Overall, the PHASE Teacher Lesson Plans provide a comprehensive and engaging framework for teaching critical outcomes and promoting community engagement among learners.
